Title: Trials of the Gods, Blog Post #5: Cosmetic Creature Customization
Post by: Zack on October 31, 2016, 01:03:43 PM
In Trials of the Gods, you'll be able to find a new type of consumable item called "Skins". These one-time-use items can be applied to your creatures to permanently change their appearance.

Skins are assigned to a specific race and can only be used on creatures that belong to that same race. For example, "Skin: Mystical Giant" can only be applied to Giants. Skins not only change a creature's battle sprite, but their overworld sprite as well. Skins do not provide any changes to a creatures' stats or traits - they are strictly cosmetic changes.

You can acquire skins by finding rare items called Fleshwarper Coins. These coins can be taken to a new object in Siralim (unlocked by default - no upgrade is necessary) where you can purchase any number of skins for each creature.

Additionally, the Steam and mobile versions of the game will have an option to purchase all the skins at once in a bundle pack for $9.99 USD. This bundle will provide you with an infinite supply of every skin in the game. If more skins are added later on, you'll receive those for free if you purchased the bundle. Please note that purchasing this pack is entirely optional, and you can obtain any skin you want without having to spend any money. All of your save files - even those that you create after purchasing the bundle - will have access to these skins. Keep in mind that all other content found in the expansion is absolutely free of charge - I don't want you to have to spend any money if you don't want to.

When Trials of the Gods launches, there will be 80 different skins for you to choose from. More might be added over time, though it's difficult to make any promises on that end.

When you breed a creature that has a skin applied to it, the item will be refunded to your inventory. Similarly, if you transform a creature into a god, the skin will be refunded in the same way.

With all of that out of the way, let's take a look at some of the new skins! Please excuse the ugly magenta backgrounds...

AAAAAAH I love this  :D

Do they come with their own overworld sprites?

I guess Avatars don't have skins.

Yes, the overworld sprites change as well!

Avatars might end up having some skins later on, but the current set of 80 that I have right now are just for normal creatures.

Will we see wandering creature groups using skins too? or just player creatures?

Just player creatures. I think it would be too confusing otherwise, since any creature from a specific race can use the same skin, so players would be forced to waste time inspecting a creature with a skin to figure out what its trait does.

Will we be able to skin creatures to other, already-existing creatures? Unless there's already a way to do that I forgot about :P

Yes, that's the only way it'll work. You have to apply the skin item to one of your creatures to change their appearance. You don't actually summon one of the skinned creatures directly.

I must have phrased that wrong - I mean, will there be a way to get a skin to make one creature look like another creature that exists, like turning a coastal observer (blue) into a glade watcher (green and leafy)? I dig the skins that were previewed, though - something about that slime is hilarious to me :)

Oh I see! Sorry for the confusion. At the moment, I don't think there will be a system to do that.

No problem! I'm excited to see what other skins will be in the full release :D

Will the skin bundle pack be available when the beta version comes out, or only when it's fully released?

It will probably be available sometime during the beta, but not necessarily at the very beginning.

I'm super torn. I like supporting this game/dev... but i also like collecting things. I love this game so far but my biggest issue is i feel like there is no "wow" factor with loot.

In Siralim 1, i was always happy when i got a pill, or a good nether orb and i feel like that is kind of missing in 2 so far. Skins would be one more thing i could look out for drop wise... but then i wouldn't be supporting the game. Gah!

I'm just pulling this idea out of thin air and haven't really thought much about it, but what if there was another microtransaction that just increased the drop rate of skins by quite a lot and was less expensive than the bundle?

Cards are great, its just that they are really the only thing loot wise that i feel are rare loot wise.

And to Zack, for me personally, i think that is a great idea. I would pay for that.

I'd personally like it if there were more cards.

I believe each creature has a card. If you just look at the Wiki you'd think there are very few cards but the Wiki has very little info on cards as they are extremely rare.

God cards will be awesome. Those are coming in the expansion.

What I would be interested in is a Siralim trading card game. I would have no one to play it with but I think it's an interesting idea.

I feel the same way. I want the drops but I also want to support the devs.  You guys should have open a donation system on your website.

So, if there are 80 skins that means there are 8 races without skins. Avatar and Dumpling are the obvious ones. As for the other ones...

I guess Aspects since there are only 4 seasons (though I'd love an Aspect skin, since there are only 5 creatures in that race). Sins are the same, there are only 7 cardinal sins, and Sanctus are their counterparts. Shapeshifters are based on class, so the same goes for them.

I'd say Golems because they already have 11 sprites, but Diabolic Horde has 10 and they got one.

Grimoires are a special family, too... I can't imagine a new Paragon either.

So I bet it's Avatar, Dumpling, Aspect, Sin, Sanctus, Shapeshifter, Grimoire, Paragon. Let's see how many I got right  :P

Some races have multiple skins (Aspects have two so far!), so there's not really a lot of direction in that regard. I left this task up to our artist entirely - he came up with all the ideas and even named them.

Yeah, I also remembered the 10 new families after posting that.

Will there be a "Compendium of Skins" in the Library submenu?

Just discussed some things with our artist, and there will definitely be at least one skin for each creature race once the expansion is fully launched. Looks like there will be over 100 skins in the end!

This will be the last Siralim game that uses this same art style. Going to try to kick up the budget a bit for the next game with more appealing graphics :)

Can you please take a look at the comment about the game's loot being unfulfilling? Rare skin drops would be cool, but I would like loot that has more substance to collect. Right now all we have is cards. THe legendary materials are SO EASY to get. YOu can just buy all of them from the store. Store doesn't have the one you want? Save/exit and look again. Same goes for the spell and artifact vendors.

Please tell me you are still sticking with 2d graphics.  Nostalgia factor is a huge part of this game for me, plus I just feel 2d graphics works better for this sort of game.

Will we be able to just choose any sprite as a skin for something? Or at least a sprite of the same family?
Title: Re: Trials of the Gods, Blog Post #5: Cosmetic Creature Customization

The skins can only be applied to creatures that belong to the skin's class.

Example:  Rainow-Aspect skin can only be applied to Aspect family creatures.

I also meant if we can choose any of the already existing sprites for skins in the same family. And not just skins that will eb specificially amde for skins

Like I really like the look of the ____ Specter, but the ____ Specter is more useful.

Oh. That is a great idea.  I don't think the skins will do that.
Although some of the Disgaea games have done this with items.

In Disgaea D2, you can just change the skin of a unit to any other unit of it''s type, and in 5, you can change the hue and saturation of every individual colour as well! xD

Any thoughts or plans about switching to a custom game engine for the next game? Something more tailored to and optimized for games of this nature? I've noticed with both Siralim games, there's a serious lag creep caused by simply have more things in memory(items, artifacts, creatures, etc.) I finally put the first Siiralim down and quit at level 12,000-something because walking around the castle became unbearably slow. I'm led to believe it's a side-effect of Game Maker Studio not really being designed nor equipped to handle the potentially endless memory usage Siralim requires, since it's so widespread.

Friday will be the definite release date for Steam and Android. As for iOS, it's already been submitted to the App Store, but there's no good way to give an estimate since they love to reject apps at random!
