I started a new game when 2.0.19 came out. (I restart to often, but I am still having fun, so it is okay :->)

In my newest game (the one started post-2.0.19) my mage is currently level 35, I have spent the game (thus far) farming Realm depths 2,3 and 4 (mostly 2,3 and a bit of 4).

I currently have found 8 Legendary crafting materials. (I haven't seen a Nether Orb yet, but I have EIGHT legendary crafting materials.) Also, as a point of comparison, I have found 8 Minor Sigils (and no Major Sigils).

This is obviously a small sample size, and so it could be that I got crazy-lucky farming low-depth realms early in the game. On the other hand, it could be a sign that something is subtly wrong with the loot distribution table in 2.0.19.

Introduce Yourself / Noetherian says "Hi"
« on: May 11, 2015, 01:53:57 PM »
I started playing the game at the Steam release, and it doesn't look like I will be stopping anytime soon, so maybe I should post an introduction.

I work in Internet security, live in Florida, and travel a lot for my job. As a frequent traveler, I appreciate that Siralim plays incredibly well on a low-powered travel laptop. (Also, it doesn't require Internet to play, so it is easy to play on an airplane or on a layover ... it is shocking how many games these days require an Internet connection to play.) I have been playing computer role-playing games since the 80's, and I am sufficiently "old-school" to believe that great gameplay trumps graphics.

I am also a chronic restarter. I have started a relatively large number of different games to try out different approaches to the early game. (Different early-game talent spending, different castle upgrade and realm unlock orders, different first nether creatures.) The downside of this is that there still quite a large number of late-game creatures that I have never seen <sigh> ... I am hoping that in my current game I stick with it long enough to actually unlock most of the creature tiers, but who knows, early-game optimizing is strangely appealing to me. :->

I am not exactly sure how I stumbled across Siralim (some days when I am bored, I randomly glance at Steam new releases, and fortunately, the day Siralim released was on of those days), but it has certainly been my kind of game. The combat system is simple, but surprisingly deep as one progresses in the game and unlocks more creatures and artifact enchants. Also, the post-release support by the development team has been incredible (already two patches since the Steam release, one of which had significant gameplay improvements ... and the other was a rapid response to fix a couple of bugs causing problems for some players). Finally, the community here on the forums has been great. Lots of helpful veterans, questions get answered quickly, everyone is friendly.

Thanks for a great community and an incredible game! I really hope that Steam release ends up being a successful may to increase exposure and grow the player base.

Help and Guides / Power Balance Question
« on: May 09, 2015, 04:44:36 PM »
Does anyone know what Power Balance effects and what it doesn't?

How does it relate to the Loot Hoarding Talent? (The two seem quite similar)

My understanding is that it doesn't affect Resources gained after a fight. (Does this include Power gains? With a name like "Power Balance" it seems possible that it might affect power gains <grin>)

The main reason that I ask is because I am trying to understand the usefulness of the Power-Balance talents (e.g., Max Power Balance and Bonus Power Balance) as compared to other talents that improve loot.

Early game, I really like the Spoils of War talent. However, as I get a bit further in the game and start to care about things like Legendary crafting materials and Nether Orb drops ... then Loot Hoarding, Treasure Findings, Better Duty Rewards, and Power Balance all seem like good talents and it is difficult for me to compare their relative value.

General Discussion / Sad Day: First Negative Steam Review
« on: May 09, 2015, 01:33:48 PM »
I suppose it was only a matter of time, but Sirilim finally has a negative Steam review. <sigh>

However, I can't figure out how to access the negative review (as a USA customer, Steam only shows me reviews that are written in English).

In any case, if you own a Steam copy of the game and you haven't written a review of the game yet, this weekend would be a great time to do so! :->

(Also, thanks again to Zack for continue to support the game with great post-release patches!)

General Discussion / End of Steamworks Event
« on: May 07, 2015, 12:57:42 PM »
Does anyone know what time tomorrow (May 8) the Steamworks event will end and Zack will stop giving out a free Pilwiz?

My plan is to create a bunch of new save files (Level 1 characters who have the free Pilwiz) so that when I start over in the future, I will be able to get the benefit of the event :->

General Discussion / Who was your first Nether creature?
« on: May 04, 2015, 12:01:40 AM »
The first time you played through the Castle Questline which creature did you use for your first Nether creature? Did you go with a Tank? a Damage Dealer? Your favorite utility creature? Did it work out well for you? Or did your make a mistake?

Personally, my first time through the quest line, I levelled up and enchanted a bunch of greens for Master Shapeshifter (the creature that I got from the initial Powerspell questline). I got all the way to the part of the quest line where you make the Nether egg, and then I realized that I didn't have any extra Master Shapeshifter cores to use in creating the egg ... and at the time I had no idea how to get more. So I started a new have and made a Nether Stronghold :-)

Can an artifact have the same property in two different secondary statistic slots? (I think the answer is no)

What happens if you go to the Enchantress and try to put a new copy of (say) "Attack" on an artifact that already has a secondary "Luck" property?

I believe that I just accidentally tried to add "Luck" to an artifact that already had a secondary "Luck" property. The Enchantress definitely took my Resources, but I am not sure if anything else happened. (In particular, I don't remember what the artifact looked like before hand ... but I believe it was 4/5 property slots filled before and it is now still 4/5 property slots filled ... so I am guessing that the enchantment just failed and I lost my resources, but I am not certain ... it is possible that it re-rolled the number on the property.)

General Discussion / Next Patch Rumors
« on: May 03, 2015, 09:18:22 AM »
Rumor has it that there is a new Siralim patch coming in the near future.

I just saw a post on the Steam Forums confirming that the chance of getting a position effect from Sorcery-realm potions will increase in the next patch.

I have also heard that there is some ability re-balancing coming (hopefully in the next patch). My understanding is that this re-balancing will especially target damaging abilities that scale with an opponent's max health (e.g., Resin).

Does anyone know of other things that are in the works for Siralim which may perhaps make it into the next patch?

Help and Guides / Is Castle Upgrade required for Orbs to drop?
« on: May 02, 2015, 09:42:13 PM »
I started a new game and I am playing for the first time without Castle Quests.

I am trying to figure out if I should build the Orb Activation Castle Upgrade as soon as possible, or if I should just wait until an Orb drops and then worry about building the upgrade.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe that with Castle Quests active, that you will never see an Orb drop until you get to the Nether Creature questline in the Castle Quests.

However, without Castle quests, will Orbs just start dropping automatically as I go deeper or do I need to do something proactive (like building the Orb Activation Castle Upgrade) in order to make it possible for an Orb to drop?

Help and Guides / Monster Positioning : Front Line / Back Line
« on: May 01, 2015, 01:26:29 PM »
I have read some posts about Siralim that talk about team compositions with certain "front line" and "back line" monsters. I am not sure if these comments are literal descriptions of where to put certain monsters, or if they are just figurative descriptions of the role a monster plays in the team.

My understanding (which may be flawed) is that monster positioning only matters when specific abilities make it matter. That is, effects like Thrust and Splash care about positioning, but otherwise it doesn't matter if my Tank is in the "front" of my team or the "back".

Is this correct? Or is there a hidden defensive (or offensive) benefit to having creatures near the front of my team?

P.S. Effects and abilities that care about positioning are a lot of fun. I am very pleased that a significant number of creatures/effects/abilities/spells care about adjacency and other positioning factors!

General Discussion / Know Anyone who needs a copy of Siralim on Steam?
« on: April 30, 2015, 12:35:01 PM »
Currently, Siralim reviews are 100% positive, which is awesome! Unfortunately, there are only 42 reviews so far (and only one curator recommending the game).

If you are reading this forum you probably already own Siralim. (I mean, I don't have the time to read forums devoted to games I don't play ... but maybe you do?)

However, maybe you know someone who would enjoy Siralim. Someone who might be willing to try out the game and -- if they like it -- post a review and help get the word out about this great game.

I purchased some copies of the game for friends during the introductory release sale on Steam, and I have a couple left over. If you know someone who might like the game and be willing to review it and help spread the word, send me a private message on these forums.

Gameplay and Balance / Combat Mechanics: Damage Equation
« on: April 29, 2015, 10:25:41 AM »
If a creature with X Attack and Y Speed hits a creature with Z defense, how much damage is dealt?

How is this damage modified if the resulting strike is a "glancing blow" or "mortal blow"?

General Discussion / Reincarnation : Game Mode Review?
« on: April 28, 2015, 08:58:44 PM »
I am new to the game -- playing since the Steam release, but loving the game! (Game is easily worth more than $10)

Thus far, I have been playing with default game settings. However, some of the alternative settings/modes seem quite interesting. (In particular, I would love to try randomized creatures at some point, but I think I need some more experience with the game before I experiment with creature randomization.)

I have played around a little bit with the Reincarnation setting and it seems a bit odd. Early game, with Reincarnation, it seems like to get the creatures that I want, instead of extracting cores, I instead kill off a level 1 creature repeatedly until he Reincarnates as the creature type that I want. (This isn't good or bad, just different.)

However, I am curious what more experienced players think of Reincarnation as the game goes on? Is it fun? frustrating? strange? Also, I am not sure how the Reincarnation mechanic works with Nether creatures? Does playing in Reincarnation mode mean that protecting your Nether creatures (or resurrecting them in battle) because a vital part of the game?

I appreciate any thoughts/reviews that you might have.
